Interview: Hiro Yoskikawa from Mastercraft Union

My name is Hiro Yoshikawa from Mastercraft Union. I grew up in a traditional 17th generation sake factory in japan, which makes sake from the beautiful Japanese water. Using the same beautiful Japanese water, my love of washing jeans began 26 years ago.

 

What are your favourite activities online and offline?
Online – Drawing. Washing denim.
Offline – Drinking sake.

Is there anything that you dislike about yourself?
I struggle to sleep sometimes when I’m heavily involved in a project. This can go on for 2-3 days at which point I become super tired.

Name your biggest childhood hero.
I wanted be Ultraman (Japanese super man).

Your biggest extravagance?
Sometimes believing in the wrong people.

Describe a perfect day for you.
No iPhone or Macbook for a day, so I can focus on my art.

Where are you living right now and why?
Hong Kong at the moment – for creativity.

Any special talents?
Skiing – I grew up in the snow mountains in Japan until I was 18. Skis were my shoes in winter.

Please name three things that you could not live without.
Denim, Sake & Paper.

What is your favourite snack?
Mentaiko.

Any plans for the future?
Continue to build the MCU brand and develop more products using Japanese paper.
